3 tips on finding volunteer assignments

The biggest challenge for freshers is to find assignments. Many organizations hesitate to take freshers or students is because they need to be a given training. Providing even basic training costs money and effort.

So, how does one go about finding the right assignments? Here are some tips:

1. Get a resume
The first step is to get down to getting your resume ready. It is a challenge as most students do not have much to talk about. To overcome this challenge, you can mention the activities that you have participated in school, various training programs that you have undergone. Even if you do not have any experience, you need to convey that you have the initiative, curiosity and interests that you pursue outside the classroom.

What do you do if you do not have anything to talk about?
Well, put together a plan in place that gives you something to talk about. You can even undergo online programs and mention them.

2. List out organizations
Make a list of organizations which are known to hire volunteers, interns. You can get this list by tapping your family, your neighbors, friends, media and so on. You can also attend programs like cultural get togetherness, lectures, talks, plays and so on. Check out various events that happen in your city. They provide you the opportunity to meet with people in a social setting. Make sure that you get their completes names and contacts.

3. Drafting an introduction
You need a very well drafted introduction letter or email. It needs to be polite, convey a genuine desire to learn something and also describes the kind of positions that you are willing to accept. It is easier for organizations to shortlist those candidates who appear to be flexible, have the right attitude and are willing to experiment. If you make an impression, then there is a possibility that you will be referred to other organizations if there are no positions available in that organization.

Work on these before you start the grunt work for landing that coveted volunteer job.
