When should you visit a Career Counsellor

careerpathimg_1Those students who are studying in Class 10 and are preparing to write their exams are under tremendous pressure to decide about their future. Even parents feel that the children ought to have decided by now what they would like to do in their life.
Well, both are wrong.

There is enough time after the exams are over to look up options, talk, discuss and explore. There is absolutely no need to address the decision about a career path RIGHT NOW.
Visit the counsellor after the exams are done.
There are so many career options for students to explore that parents believe that they ought to decide what they wish to do by the time they are ready to write their Class X exams. Children these days are so focussed on studies and exams that they hardly get opportunities to indulge in any other activities. And it is expected that they will not be able to answer questions like what do they like to do, what they find interesting, and what they find exciting.
The decision on what the child wishes to pursue in future is not easy to make. There are many adults who find it hard to decide even after they have worked for a few years. So, it is really not fair to expect 15 year old youngsters to come up with a career plan before they have experienced various tasks.
A few decades ago, it was easier because there were very few options for children to choose from. The prosperity and astounding body of knowledge that human kind has collated along with the technology, has certainly led to a myriad choices of life and work.
The choices that are available have also made it very challenging to arrive at a life and career decision. It is indeed a necessity, not an indulgence that an attempt is made to understand the personality of the child. An hyperactive child will make a disastrous choice of a career that requires sitting at a table; similarly, a child who likes structure and routine in life will be miserable in a work choice that required working with flexible work hours and travelling.
So, do not discuss these issues with your children if they are taking their Class X exams and stress them out more. There is nothing that they need to decide a few weeks before they write their which is going to have a negative impact on their future career.
